From early childhood, Julie knew she wanted to be a nurse. As a teenager, volunteering as a candy-striper fueled a passion for the profession that she shared with countless others throughout her life. Her successful career began as a school nurse in the Sweetwater Union High School District of San Diego, California, where she later became Director of School Nursing. She went on to serve as Director of Academic Affairs at University of Phoenix, and then Brookline College as the Dean of Nursing. The last seven years of her career were spent as Senior Vice President of Student Success at HotChalk.
Julie obtained a BS in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing, both from San Diego State University, and a PhD in Nursing from University of San Diego. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society for nursing students, and maintained active nursing licenses in multiple states, including Alabama, where she resided.
The Julia A. Smith Foundation is proud to carry forward Julie's profound love of nursing and education, creating a lasting legacy of altruism in her honor.
